De-kludging Free Kraut; Game Thread

May 8, 2009

In place of your basic lineup list, DFA and I present to you the following:

Beta Version of a usable FK site

You should probably set up your own login (it defaults to editor), but it may take longer than expected to get your password, so you can also sign in as jcrewjr / freekraut. Either way you’ll get Editor (not administrator) rights. I don’t know what, if any, settings you can change but please FOR THE LOVE OF PICKLED CABBAGE don’t change any site-wide settings (you can upload an avatar and play with your sigline if you want). The software is heavily customized, so changes through the admin interface may break things that you can’t unbreak. Also, do not post actual content on this site as it will not survive the transition (as, I hope, the content here will).

Now, features:

Threaded comments which use ajax (post without reloading page) and are much less space intensive
Support for siglines and avatars
Unread comment tracking (plus Z key functionality – note that when you press the z key you’ll get an alert that says “called,” this ensures the function is triggered. If pressing z doesn’t work as expected, I’ll want to know whether you get the alert and what browser you’re using.)
Wide-screen format
Post filtering (DLDs and Game Threads to sidebar so they don’t knock out other posts)
Post minimizing (All main-area posts except for the first one display only their excerpt)
Images in comments (and buttons to do html markup)

Please let me know if there is anything unintuitive/missing/whatever. If I can add it, I will. Please check it out and play around this weekend so that I can move forward with implementing whatever bugs there are.

Update from your self-proclaimed (and mostly inept) web “master”

April 13, 2009

All,

The details of Free Kraut’s hosting arrangement are being finalized (we’ll have php and mySQL). At the moment, I’m planning on using a wordpress system because this is a wordpress system (just an extremely limited one) and because [insert other reason here].

Does anyone have other suggestions for a new content-management / blogging system? My experience is very limited, and my “throw-up-my-hands” point is early, but I do plan to do some custom coding so that what we wind up with is a lot more usable than this site.

For the moment, I am accepting any and all suggestions for blogging software other than WordPress. Please, however, tell me why your suggestion is better since I don’t actually know anything about this stuff. Once we get the new software set up, there will be more posts about features, CSS (my design taste runs towards not actually having any), and other similar stuff. I’m confident that we’ll eventually wind up with some approximation of what we want, however if I don’t get any input you’ll all be stuck with what I want. If that doesn’t scare you, it should.

Freeing FREE KRAUT

March 31, 2009

First, let me say I’m loving the flexibility here (and am seriously tempted to post this as someone else’s user name).  That said, I discovered that there are plugins developed for WordPress.  Here are some I think we should use:

  1. SHOW UNREAD COMMENTS (allcaps = install it or I’ll flag all your comments)
  2. Apparently allows images in comments, but I think it might be uploading them and therefore untenable.
  3. A tool that would allow me to just read 74mk’s comments
  4. Comment preview, but appears to require something called jQuery.

Personally, I think #1 is a must have (assuming it actually works), the rest would be nice, and there are almost certainly other plugins we should set up.

What are the problems? What’s not working? What could be improved?

And … who here can do anything about it? Remember, we’re all admins (though it seems as though wp’s “must be logged in to comment” applies to wp users, not registered KRAUThors), so … if there’s something you can fix/improve — go for it.
